Josip Horvat (CRO), biography

I was born in 1987 in Celje (Slovenia). I hold a BA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, Department of Art Education (2009) and an MA from the same Academy, Department of Animated Film and New Media (2011). I have attended numerous workshops organized by the Student Centre in Zagreb and my professors. As a student I accidentally connected with people from Queer Zagreb, Perforations, the Student Centre, who gave me the space to explore – and I am extremely grateful for that. My role models are based on “Camp“ movement and artists like Ulrike Ottinger, Jean Gennet, Yvonne Reiner and Pine Bausch.

INTERVIEW

G: Where are you starting from and how?

JH: My artistic ideas are not limited by any medium. In the last couple of years I have, accidentally, through the development and exploration of myself, noticed that I possess an element of theatricality – so I am trying to realize this potential through video and performances. I approach work in a very systematic way, thus I contemplate every detail of what I want to realize, from colour, material, quality of the recording, frame, of what is visible and invisible. Every detail has its own meaning and is connected with the story.

G: Which way are you going?

JH: I hold a BA Degree from the Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Education, Zagreb and an MA Degree from the Department of Animated Film and New Media, also from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. I have also attended numerous workshops organized by the Student Centre in Zagreb and my professors. As a student I accidentally connected with people from Queer Zagreb, Perforations, the Student Centre, who gave me the space to explore – and I am extremely grateful for that. My role models are based on “Camp“ movement and artists like Ulrike Ottinger, Jean Gennet, Yvonne Reiner and Pine Bausch – there are many more, but I think these four have influenced me the most.

G: Where are you going to?

JH: My short-term goal is to complete the existing projects, make my own experimental film and start working on a performance that I would call anything but theatre. I am not the type of person that would fixate on dealing only with specific topics and medium, I am open to everything new life brings me. When I look back ten years from now I want to see a number of projects and works with which I made a mark, not necessarily a mark in history, but mark on people. I want to re-examine everything with my work – from artistic value to social influence of an artwork. One day I would want my film to win both Oscar and Golden Raspberry Award at the same time, for the best and worst movie – that would be my ultimate statement.
